"Will NIAS accept your CERAD Certificates?"

In the most recent advertisement by NIAS for already qualified EMT's or AAP's  they set out the requirements for those wanting to join the service as "already qualified"

In short, you need to meet 2 Qualifications (1 Clinical qualification and 1 Driving qualification), and 3 "other" criteria (shiftwork, 3 points or less on your licence and have Category C1 on your licence):

Qualifications Specified in the recent recruitment:

  • "Level 4 Diploma for Associate Ambulance Practitioners (AAP) OR IHCD Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Award OR equivalent qualification."
  • "FutureQuals Level 3 – Pathway 1 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving OR equivalent qualification"

FutureQuals have 3 different Pathway's, other AO's do not specify this on their Certificates (if you chose to try the "Equivalent Qualification" route)

FutureQuals CERAD Pathways:

  1. C1 Ambulance
  2. B Category Ambulance Vehicle
  3. B Category RRV Car

Interestingly, we have had learners employed by NIAS (NQP's and AAP's) who undertook Pathway 2 previously with us, and this is the first time NIAS have specified the "Pathway 1" in their recruitment. This is likely the development and separation of their internal driving team away from general training with the appointment of a new Driver Education Lead.

Generally, we are not aware of anyone at this time being successful in "Equivalent Qualifications"; however if you have aspirations to join NIAS by training privately, from this recent recruitment exercise it is now apparent that you should aim to achieve your C1 driving license and FutureQuals Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (Pathway 1); before embarking on your Clinical Qualification.

Consider what qualifications employers want and do not rely solely on terms such as AAP and CERAD; speak to the service you have aspirations to join and ensure you are undertaking the right qualification. We are able to offer Qualifications from a range of Awarding Organisations; understand and ensure you know what you are looking for and what you are getting.
